The Log Book: A Journey of Reflection, Learning and Growth
At Penang Suya Meiyarivagam (PSM), we believe that reflection is an essential part of meaningful learning. To support this process, every student is provided with a personal log book that documents their learning journey throughout the year.
From Thevaram studies to the various Living Skills programmes, students use their log books to record key lessons, reflect on their experiences, and express their understanding in their own words. This practice encourages active participation in learning and helps students develop the habit of thoughtful reflection.
The log book also serves as an important assessment tool. Through regular review of students’ entries, teachers gain valuable insights into each student’s understanding, progress, and personal learning experiences. This enables educators to provide guidance and support that is better suited to individual learning needs.
Beyond assessment, the log book encourages creativity and self-expression. Students are free to personalise their entries through writing, illustrations, diagrams, and creative designs. This makes learning more engaging while fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
The log book also helps extend learning beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to share their learning with their parents, discuss the lessons they have learned, and apply the values and skills acquired through PSM’s programmes in their daily lives. In this way, learning becomes a continuous process that connects the classroom, home, and community.
At the end of each year, all log books are reviewed and evaluated. Outstanding log books that demonstrate excellence in reflection, understanding, presentation, and creativity are recognised and rewarded, encouraging students to maintain a high standard of effort throughout their learning journey.
More than just a record of classroom activities, the PSM log book serves as a valuable tool for reflection, assessment, creativity, family engagement, and personal growth.
